Improve Your AC with Zone Control

Cooling season is almost here, and many people are having their air conditioners professionally checked to make sure they’re in good shape. That’s a good thing to do, but it’s not the only thing you can do to improve your air conditioning situation this summer. Read on to find out more about zone control, and how it can dramatically improve your air conditioning efficiency.

What is Zone Control?

A zone control system is a series of dampers installed in the ductwork of the home, splitting it into different zones. Each damper has its own thermostat, which can open and close it depending on the needs of the room in which it is installed. When a thermostat detects the need for air conditioning, it opens the appropriate dampers and turns on the system. This allows one part of the home to receive air conditioning without affecting the rest of the house.

Advantages of Zone Control

One of the biggest issues with centralized forced air systems is that they only have two settings: on and off. Either the air conditioner conditions the entire home, or none of it. The problem with this method of cooling is that it doesn’t take differences in insulation and sun exposure into account, creating hot and cold spots throughout the house. Empty rooms also have a lot of energy wasted on them.

A zone control system counteracts these disadvantages by giving you a much finer level of control over your indoor climate. With a zone control system installed, you can ensure that each part of your home receives just as much, or as little, air conditioning as it needs. No more wasting energy on rooms that don’t need it, or warring with family members over a single thermostat.
