If you’ve been thinking about having all or a section of your pipes replaced, you’ve probably at least heard the terms PEX piping and copper piping. Copper piping has been the preferred material for plumbers for a long time, but PEX (a type of plastic) has been surging in recent years.
PEX has a number of benefits over copper, including better durability in extreme temperatures, higher stress resistance and lower susceptibility to acids, alkalines and other water quality variations. That said, a lot of plumbers still prefer copper. So the real question is – which is better?

Advantages of PEX Piping
- Resistant to extreme hot (200 F) and extreme cold (well below freezing)
- Can be used in conjunction with metal and PVC piping
- Fewer fittings, making it faster to install and less likely to leak
- Burst-resistant thanks to its ability to expand and contract
- Has a shutoff valve at each supply line, making it much easier to repair
- Flexible enough to be bent around corners without the use of couplings or fittings
Disadvantages of PEX Piping
- Damaged by UV radiation, so it cannot be used outdoors
- Shorter lifespan and can’t be recycled
- Impermeable membrane allows the possibility of water contamination
Advantages of Copper Piping
- Durable and flexible
- Weather and bacteria-resistant
- More corrosion-resistant than other metals, like iron
- Unaffected by UV rays and safe for outdoor use
- Does not release toxic gases in a fire
- Recyclable, making it more environmentally friendly
Disadvantages of Copper Piping
- Can corrode, leaving a metallic taste in your water
- Becoming increasingly expensive
- Can freeze and burst during the winter
