Do I Need to Replace My Water Heater This Winter?

Getting up early during a cold, cold morning and taking a hot shower is a great feeling. What isn’t so great is getting up early during a cold, cold morning and taking an ice-cold shower. You probably don’t want to find yourself without hot water in the middle of winter, so it’s a good idea to make sure that your water heater is able to make it through another season without dying on you. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the warning signs that you may need to replace your water heater before the winter is over.

Consistently Low Output

There’s a difference between temporarily exhausting your water heater’s supply and having the system struggle to generate enough supply in the first place. Older water heaters lose efficiency as they get closer to the end of their lifespans. If your water heater can’t generate enough hot water to meet even a moderate amount of demand, it’s a good indication that you need a new one.

Repairs Spike

All water heaters need repairs from time to time, but the older a water heater gets, the more likely it will be to develop problems. If you need to repair your water heater multiple times a year, it’s probably more cost-effective in the long run to have it replaced.

Age

Water heaters tend to last 10-15 years, after which they start to become increasingly difficult to maintain. If your water heater is older than 15 years, you should really consult with a professional about whether or not you would be better served by installing a new system. Better to replace it now than to have it completely break down.
