Which Water Heater Type is Best for You?

When you think of a water heater, you probably think of a tank water heater. This makes sense, since that was pretty much the only option for residential water heating for decades. However, modern water heaters offer a much wider array of options for homeowners. Let’s take a look at some of the different water heater types that can benefit you.

Tank Water Heaters

Despite the advent of more modern water heater technologies, tank water heaters remain incredibly popular. A tank water heater uses a large storage tank to maintain a standing supply of hot water. The water heater stays on at all times in order to keep hot water available at a moment’s notice. The advantages of using a tank water heater include high output and rapid response. It will take a lot of demand over a long period of time in order to exhaust a tank water heater.

Tankless Water Heaters

A tankless water heater, as you might expect, does not use a storage tank. Instead, it uses a heat exchanger to heat water on the way to its destination. The water heater only turns on when it is needed, which allows it to save quite a bit of energy on an annual basis. It is slightly easier to overwhelm, however, since it doesn’t keep a large supply of water stored.

Heat Pump Water Heaters

A heat pump water heater uses an evaporator coil to siphon heat from the surrounding air. The collected heat is then vented into the storage tank in order to heat the water. This is quite possibly one of the most energy efficient models on the market, combining the benefits of both tank and tankless water heaters.
