How Does an ERV Work?
An energy recover ventilator does two things simultaneously, thanks to a heat exchanger at the core of the device: it expels your used, stale indoor air but takes the energy from this air and applies it to the incoming fresh air. The best way to demonstrate the effects is to look at the process per season. During the winter months, your ERV will expel your stale, warm indoor air while a fan pulls in fresh, dry, cold air from the outside. As the warm air is expelled, its heat energy and moisture are transferred to the incoming cold air, pre–warming it and humidifying it. In the summer, the opposite happens: the energy from your cool air is applied to the incoming warm, moist air, cooling it and dehumidifying it.
