Keeping The Heat In and Your Cost Down

With the fall months quickly approaching the mid-Atlantic region, you will find yourself switching from lighter to heavier clothing. Whether you live along the Potomac in Arlington, VA or inland Chevy Chase, MD, you will be exchanging shorts for pants and short sleeves for sweaters. You will find yourself taking the trip to your thermostat and turning up the heat in our homes. You will also find yourself spending more money on your home heating bill then in the past. High gas prices are nothing new to Americans. Within the past six months we have seen an increase in oil prices as well as natural gas prices. No matter how you heat your home this fall and winter, one thing that is guaranteed is that you will be spending more. The staff at Magnolia Plumbing is committed to providing our customers with the tips and services needed to ensure your satisfaction.

The first step to lowering your heating bills this year is to install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats regulate the temperature in your home at night and during the day. Once you have installed a programmable thermostat we recommend that you reduce your heat to 68 degrees. Where this may create an environment that is a bit cooler than you are used to, extra layers will come in handy and regulate your body heat. We also recommend that you lower the thermostat on your water heater. Some water heaters may be set to 140 degrees. This is unnecessary. The staff at Magnolia Plumbing recommends that you keep your water heater at 120 degrees. When you run the water at is warmest setting on your faucet, you should still be able to place your hand under the stream. If you cannot, your thermostat is set too high.

Over time, furnace filters will become clogged with dust and other undesirable particles. Clogged filters lower your heater's efficiency by restricting the airflow passing through your furnace. Most filters last for 30-days and can be purchased at your local hardware store. Having your furnace and HVAC system cleaned and tuned up annually will help efficiency and shave money off your month bill. Contact Magnolia Plumbing today to receive a quote on HVAC tune-ups.

Most of the heat that is pumped into our homes does not stay in our home. It is important to close all storm windows and doors as well as make sure your fireplace and stove vents are shut when not in use. Checking and replacing weather stripping on doors and windows can also keep your heat from escaping. Air leaks around windows not only let air out but also let air in. The air drafty alone can lower the temperature in your home significantly. Before you turn on your heat this fall/winter, make sure all weather stripping on doors and windows is in place.
