When to Install a New Heat Pump

Heat pumps have expiration dates, just like the rest of us. No matter how well you take care of your heat pump, there will come a time when it just can’t get you through another season. It’s important that you be able to identify the signs that your heat pump needs to be replaced. Otherwise, you may suddenly find yourself without climate control when it permanently breaks down on you. Read on for some of the signs that you need a new heat pump system.

The older a heat pump gets, the more worn out it gets. The more worn out it gets, the more its efficiency will drop. In order to compensate for the falling output, a heat pump will have to operate for longer and longer periods of time. This causes the operating costs for the system to rise. If your monthly bills for your heat pump are rising for no apparent reason, it’s time to consider installing a new one.

Eventually, the cumulative effect of all that wear and tear will go beyond efficiency drops and start causing parts to fail. Normally, you shouldn’t need to repair your heat pump more than once every few years. If you have to have your heat pump repaired every few months, it’s a pretty good sign that you need to install a new one.

Heat pumps are manufactured to last around 20 years, after which point they become increasingly difficult to maintain. You can keep a heat pump going long after that 20 year mark, if you have the money for it. In the long run, however, it’s far more affordable to simply install a new system.
